26 October 2008

I will be travelling to Rwanda with Genevieve,  who is an anesthesia resident and a good friend. We have put in several months of preparations - researching the experience of other volunteers, reading about Rwanda, preparing talks, organizing supplies to bring, filling out applications, getting vaccinated and trying to clear up enough space from our busy lives in Halifax to leave for a month.  I should also add that we have been trying to improve our French as that will be the working language in Rwanda.  We have been told the anesthesia residents speak English but not necessarily with ease.

We will leave very late on October 30th,  flying via London and Nairobi with a long layover in each.  If things go according to plan, we will reach Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, in the early afternoon of November 1st.  It will take us a few days to get settled but I will try to do a blog update as soon as possible.  We will have some challenges with intermittent electricity and internet services.

Thank you to everyone for your good wishes and I sincerely hope this journey will be of benefit.

18 October 2008

I've just created this blog so this is a test.  Genevieve and I are excited but apprehensive about the journey to Rwanda.
